Akrotiri is the common name of the peninsula that is located 10 km North East of the city of Chania and north of Souda Bay. Its scenic landscapes, gorgeous beaches and peaceful environment make it a famous tourist destination for many visitors every year.
With amazing walking paths, gorges of outstanding beauty for a unique hiking experience and stunning views of the White Mountains and Souda Bay, the landscape is ideal for nature lovers. The beauties of the cape include many caves with archaeological and lithological interest. There are also numerous beautiful, clean beaches in the peninsula: “Stavros”, where the movie “Zorba” starring Anthony Quinn was filmed, “Kalathas”, “Tersanas” “Agios Onoufrios” and “Marathi” are just a few of them.
Akrotiri is also known as the Holy Mountain of Crete. That is because it has many churches and monasteries such as Agia Triada built in the 17th century and Gouverneto Monastery built in the 16th century. The tombs of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sofoklis are also found on Akrotiri on a spot overlooking the city of Chania.
There are many charming, traditional villages on the cape and attractive small towns were you can find restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, bakeries, etc.
Akrotiri is only a 10-15 minute drive to Chania, one of the most beautiful cities of Greece with its Venetian harbour and picturesque, historical town.
