Elounda is a cosmopolitan holiday resort on the North East coast of Crete 12 km north of Agios Nikolaos. Although it is actually a small fishing village, its magnificent location, beautiful beaches and peaceful environment has made it into a favorite tourist destination.
That is exactly why some of the world’s most exclusive and luxurious hotels and resorts can be found in the area of Elounda and why many VIPs (from politicians and royalty, to singers and actors) prefer Elounda as their favorite holiday destination.
In the village around the main square and by the sea you will find traditional tavernas to taste the famous Cretan cuisine, romantic restaraurants and cosmopolitan night bars. There are also many shops were you can buy anything from expensive jewellery to small souvenirs and gifts.
Elounda boasts many different beaches to enjoy during your holiday. With pebbles or sand, shallow or deep, organized or not, they all have crystal, blue water and magical scenery. There are also many places were you can find a variety of water sports.
Just a few minutes’ drive from Elounda you will find the small village of Plaka with some nice fish restaurants and a beautiful, pebble beach with the clearest water.
Plaka overlooks the famous island of Spinalonga which was the main setting for Victoria’s Hislop’ best seller, “The Island”.
Spinalonga sits at the entrance of Mirabello bay and has a Venetian fortress built on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. In the 20th century it was used as a leper colony for patients suffering from Hansen’s disease. Today Spinalonga is a popular tourist attraction. It can be easily accessed from Elounda and Plaka as there are daily boat trips to the island and the small, sandy beach of Kolokitha.
